Create two contests (A+B) with one section each

The following instructions are based on the the recommended permanent settings in another chapter of this case study.

Open two Magic Contest windows

Having multiple windows open at the same time can sometimes be confusing. You are recommended to do the following:

  • Start a new Magic Contest window for section A
  • The main window is first opened, and then Contest Explorer in front of that
  • Close Contest Explorer
  • Grab the main window with the mouse and move it a little bit to the left

Leave window A for a while. Now continue with section B:

  • Start another Magic Contest window for section B
  • Close Contest Explorer as above
  • Grab the main window with the mouse and move it a little bit to the right

You now have two windows that overlap slightly. This will allow you to jump between section A and section B easier than otherwise.

Start two Magic Contest contests

Start contest A (=section A):

  • Select window A (to the left)
  • Click Contest Explorer
  • Click New contest > Pair contest
  • Enter the contest name, for instance A, and click Next
  • In the What next? window, accept Close preparations and click Finish
  • Enter number of A tables and click Next
  • Confirm number of boards and click Next
  • Select the suitable movement in the list and click Next
  • Select Enter names and click Finish

This is all for now in contest A. Start contest B (=section B):

  • Select window B (to the right)
  • Click Contest Explorer
  • Click New contest > Pair contest
  • Enter the contest name, for instance B, and click Next
  • In the What next? window, accept Close preparations and click Finish
  • Enter number of B tables
  • Change the section letter from A to B and click Next
  • Confirm number of boards and click Next
  • Select the suitable movement in the list and click Next
  • Select Enter names and click Finish

Howell or Reduced Howell

A lot of Danish clubs use Howell or Reduced Howell as their preferred movement. For instance, Reduced Howell is used for 5-6 tables, 24 boards, and 3 boards per round. The built-in movements in Magic Contest all come from the orange book called Movements – A fair approach, by Hallén, Hanner and Jannersten.

Note! The built-in movements are not always identical with the corresponding movements used by the Danish Bridge Federation. For that reason, you must print guidecards from Magic Contest to make sure that the correct pair numbers and movement instructions are given to the players.

Åbn to Magic Contest-vinduer

At have flere vinduer åbne samtidig kan undertiden være forvirrende. Det anbefales at gøre følgende:

  • Start et nyt Magic Contest-vindue for A-rækken
  • Hovedvinduet åbnes først, og derefter Contest Explorer foran det
  • Luk Contest Explorer
  • Klik på hovedvinduet med musen og flyt det lidt til venstre

Og lad vindue A stå på skærmen. Fortsæt nu med B-rækken:

  • Start et andet Magic Contest-vindue til B-rækken
  • Luk Contest Explorer som ovenfor
  • Kli på hovedvinduet med musen og flyt det lidt til højre

Du har nu to vinduer, der overlapper lidt. Dette gør det muligt at nemmere hoppe mellem A-rækken og B-rækken.

Opret to Magic Contest-turneringer

Opret turnering A (=A-rækken):

  • Vælg vindue A (til venstre)
  • Klik på Contest Explorer
  • Klik på New contest > Pair contest
  • Indtast turneringsnavnet f.eks. A, og klik på Næste
  • I What next?-vinduet, accepter Close preparations og klik på Afslut
  • Indtast antal A-borde, og klik på Næste
  • Bekræft antal spil og klik på Næste
  • Vælg den passende skifteplan i listen, og klik på Næste
  • Vælg Enter names, og klik Afslut

Dette er alt for nu i turnering A. Opret turnering B (=B-rækken):

  • Vælg vindue B (til højre)
  • Klik på Contest Explorer
  • Klik på New contest > Pair contest
  • Indtast turneringsnavnet f.eks. B, og klik på Næste
  • I What next?-vinduet, accepter Close preparations og klik på Afslut
  • Indtast antal B-borde
  • Skift rækkebogstav fra A til B, og klik på Næste
  • Bekræft antal spil og klik på Næste
  • Vælg den passende skifteplan i listen, og klik på Næste
  • Vælg Enter names, og klik Afslut

Howell eller Reduceret Howell

Mange danske klubber bruger Howell eller Reduced Howell som deres foretrukne skifteplan. For eksempel anvendes Reduced Howell til 5-6 borde 24 spil og 3 spil pr. runde. De indbyggede skifteplaner i Magic Contest kommer alle fra den orange bog, der hedder Movements – A fair approach, af Hallén, Hanner og Jannersten.

Bemærk! De indbyggede skifteplaner er ikke altid identiske med de tilsvarende skifteplaner der anvendes af det Danske Bridgeforbund. Af den grund skal du udskrive guidekort fra Magic Contest for at sikre, at de korrekte parnumre og skifteinstruktioner er givet til spillerne.
